cc:Mail INTEGRATED WITH VINES
cc:Mail Cooperates with StreetTalk
Eliminating Need for Dual Directory Services
Move Seen as Encouragement for Other Independent Software Vendors
to Develop Products for VINES
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., October 22, 1990 -- Banyan Systems of
Westboro, Mass., and cc:Mail of Mountain View, Calif., today
jointly announced a new VINESR network-specific version of the
popular cc:MailR E-mail package -- cc:Mail for VINES. Compatible
with the current release of cc:Mail, this is the first version of
cc:Mail to be integrated closely with the directory and mail
transport services of a network operating system.
cc:Mail for VINES tightly integrates the respective product
architectures of the two companies around a common StreetTalkR
global directory database, which eliminates the need for network
administrators to set up and manage independent directories for E-
mail and network directory services. This saves considerable time
and effort, while enabling end users to gain the benefits of full
cc:Mail functionality in the VINES environment.

"Banyan actively solicits independent software vendors, such as
cc:Mail, Inc., to develop applications packages for VINES networks
so that users will have the widest possible selection of products
from which to choose," said David C. Mahoney, Banyan President and
CEO. "Today's announcement of cc:Mail for VINES is very exciting:
It benefits the two companies' overlapping customer bases by
expanding the options available to them; it makes both products
more appealing to the large installed bases who presently use only
the products; and it's attractive to prospective customers who
appreciate the value of integration."
"The work between Banyan and cc:Mail is the first manifestation of
cc:Mail's strategy to integrate directory and transport services of
network operating systems with our software," said Philippe F.
Courtot, President and CEO of cc:Mail. "The key for customers is
that the tight coupling between StreetTalk and cc:Mail eliminates
the inconvenience of maintaining dual directories for mail and
network directory services. This is a real boon for the many
customers who have standardized on cc:Mail and VINES -- or will --
and who want tight integration between the two products."
cc.Mail for VINES will be commercially available in the first half
of 1991 from cc:Mail, Inc., and their resellers. In addition, an
upgrade program will be announced for users of the cc:Mail LAN
Package.
